GB WhatsApp Banned: How to Recover Your Number (2026 Guide)

Modded WhatsApp clients like GB WhatsApp, YoWhatsApp and FMWhatsApp are the single most common cause of permanent bans. Here is the realistic, official-only way to get your number back.

Short answer

There is no safe long-term path with GB WhatsApp. The realistic recovery is: uninstall any mod, install the official WhatsApp from Play Store / App Store, log back in with your number, and — if it still says you are banned — submit one honest appeal that names the mod, says you have removed it, and promises not to use one again.

What "GB WhatsApp" actually is

GB WhatsApp, YoWhatsApp (YO WA), FMWhatsApp (FM WA), WhatsApp Plus and similar are unofficial reverse-engineered clients. They take the official WhatsApp APK, modify it to add features like read-receipt hiding, custom themes, multi-account or scheduled messages, and re-sign it. The protocol is still WhatsApp’s, but the client is not.

From WhatsApp’s point of view, a modded client is unauthorised software touching their network. The Terms of Service forbid this, and the server is allowed to ban any number found using one.

How WhatsApp detects modded clients

  • APK signature mismatch. The official build is signed by WhatsApp Inc; mods are signed by the mod author. On every connection, the server can read this.
  • Client integrity checks. Modern clients ship Play Integrity / DeviceCheck attestations. Mods can’t pass them honestly.
  • Behavioral signals. Features only mods offer (auto-reply scripts, mass forwarding without rate limits) leave fingerprints.
  • Reports. A few "anti-WhatsApp Plus" pushes have been delivered as in-app prompts in past years; the server already knows which numbers are running mods at that point.

What the ban screen usually looks like

Depending on severity, you may see one of:

  • "You need the official WhatsApp to log in" — softest case. Reinstall the official app, log back in, no appeal needed.
  • "Your phone number is banned from using WhatsApp" — full ban. You have to appeal.
  • "This account is not allowed to use WhatsApp" — common after several mod sessions.

Step-by-step recovery

  1. Back up local mod data, but do not import it. Copy the WhatsApp GB / Databases folder to a safe location for archive only. Do not try to merge it into the official app — that has been the source of many escalated bans.
  2. Uninstall every WhatsApp variant on the device. Settings → Apps → WhatsApp / WhatsApp Business / GB WhatsApp / YOWhatsApp / FMWhatsApp → Uninstall.
  3. Install the official WhatsApp. Play Store or App Store only. Side-loaded APKs from a search-engine link are still a risk.
  4. Verify the number. Enter your number, receive the SMS code, and let the official app set itself up. You may see "This number is banned" immediately — that is normal.
  5. If the official app loads normally, you’re done. The mod "ban" was only enforced against the mod, not your number.
  6. If you see a ban screen with "Request a Review", open it, submit a single appeal (template below), then wait. Don’t submit again.
  7. If there is no "Request a Review" button, email support@whatsapp.com from the same address you can verify, with your full international number and a short note.

Appeal template for a GB / mod ban

Hello WhatsApp Support,

My WhatsApp account (+CC XXXXXXXXXX) is showing as banned. I previously used GB WhatsApp / an unofficial WhatsApp version, and I now understand this is not allowed under WhatsApp’s Terms of Service.

I have already uninstalled the unofficial app and installed the official WhatsApp from the Play Store / App Store. I will not use any unofficial or modded WhatsApp again.

I use WhatsApp to keep in touch with family, friends and contacts who know me personally. Please review my number and consider restoring access.

Thank you for your time.

The free appeal generator will produce a personalized version of this with your name and country pre-filled — choose "Used unofficial WhatsApp (GB / YO / FM)" as the reason.

What not to do

  • Don’t install "the newer anti-ban GB WhatsApp" — there isn’t one that survives in the long run.
  • Don’t pay any "WhatsApp unban service." Every paid unban service is a scam — only WhatsApp can lift a ban.
  • Don’t register your number on three new phones in a row hoping one slips through. Each attempt makes the server more confident the ban is correct.
  • Don’t copy msgstore.db from the mod into the official app folder — that is associated with extra "unauthorized client" flags.

What to do if recovery fails

A small percentage of mod-related bans never come back. If the appeal is rejected twice with no extra information, the realistic options are:

  • Use a different phone number on the official app (a fresh number, not a re-issued one).
  • For business communications, switch to WhatsApp Business or the Business Platform / API, with proper opt-in.
  • Inform your contacts via SMS / Signal / Telegram about the new number.

Long-term: stay on official WhatsApp

Most "missing features" of GB WhatsApp (multiple accounts, scheduled posts, custom backgrounds, read-receipt hiding) are now available in the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. The risk of permanent loss of a number you have used for years is not worth a slightly nicer theme picker.

Frequently asked questions

Is GB WhatsApp illegal?

It is not illegal in most countries, but it is a violation of WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. WhatsApp can ban any number caught using a modded client, with no obligation to refund or restore anything.

I just installed GB WhatsApp and got banned within minutes. Why?

Recent versions of the official WhatsApp client detect modded signatures on login. If you log in with a mod, the server can flag the account immediately. The fix is to switch back to the official app and submit one honest appeal.

Will my chat history come back if I switch to official WhatsApp?

Only if you backed up to Google Drive or iCloud from the official app. GB WhatsApp local backups are stored in a different folder and cannot be restored into the official app. Restoring an "msgstore.db" file across forks is unreliable.

Can I keep my number on a "newer anti-ban GB" version?

No version is truly anti-ban. Every mod is reverse-engineered from the official app and updated after every WhatsApp release. The detection cycle always catches up; people who claim a permanent fix are selling installers.

My ban is permanent. Is there any way to appeal a GB-related ban?

Yes, you can submit one appeal acknowledging that you used an unofficial app, that you have switched to the official WhatsApp, and that you will not use a mod again. Success rates are lower than for mistaken bans, but a clean, honest appeal is still the best chance.
